What are some silly ideas that people have about NASA?

That the people there make a lot of money and work in expensive and shiny facilities—like in the movies.

No. NASA tries to pay what it must to keep the workforce it needs, but most of its employees could make more elsewhere—from the SCUBA assistants in the Neutral Buoyancy LAB to the Public Affairs Officers to the astronauts—many of whom carry extremely marketable advanced degrees.

Like most government outfits, NASA can focus obscene levels of funding on something when Congress asks them to. That’s how we got the giant vacuum chamber in which atomic thermal rockets were tested during the 1960s, the Space Thermal Environment Chamber, and the entire Apollo program.

But also like most government outfits, NASA is pretty responsible with the assets it has to shepherd, most of the time.

That’s why the rig at Langley built in the 1960s to train pilots to fly in lunar gravity still exists, having served the country for fifty years as a small aircraft crash test facility.

It’s why this same gantry was used, even at the height of Apollo, to test capsule recovery methods, train lunar landing crews, and test lunar spacesuit design, among other things.

It’s why the same launchpads, crawler transporters, and assembly infrastructure built for Apollo still exist, were adapted to service the Shuttle and are now being leased by Space-X.

It’s why the old NASA Communications System at Goddard championed on until 2010:

And it’s why NASA’s Ames Research Center still operates the ten story Vertical Motion Simulator built in the 1970s to train shuttle pilots.

@ Greg Kemnitz

Yup – we went on an open-house tour of NASA Ames and the office buildings and such are basically 1960s and older, and even a number of WWII-era buildings with “NACA” (National Advisory Council on Aeronautics, NASA’s ancestor org) on them. It’s quite a shock as the surrounding tech company area (NASA Ames is smack-dab in the middle of Silicon Valley) has been upgrading its office-building stock for a decade now, and most buildings are no older than 20 years and many 10 years or newer.

They do have a bunch of cool space toys and fancy gadgetry in those decrepit old buildings though…

As a parallel to “Never change a winning team”, it also makes sense to “Never change perfectly functional equipment”, even if it doesn’t look like the latest fashion.
